EMX3 Wins Gold at National Design Awards

15 October 2008

AuCom is proud to announce success in the Best Design Awards. AuCom’s EMX3 soft starter won the category in the non-consumer product section, and was awarded the only gold in its class.

The Best Design Awards are the national award programme of the Designers Institute of New Zealand, recognising New Zealand's best graphic, product and spatial design.

The judges praised the EMX3 as “a great example of the power of design to express and communicate. The EMX3 achieved an international standard of engineering quality and product desirability in a technical product category. It is well resolved and thoughtfully considered in terms of both technical and human factors.”

AuCom’s design team partnered with  design consultancy 4ormfunction for  the industrial design of the starter.  According to Darryl Best – creative director at 4ormfunction,  “our collaborative relationship with AuCom continues to bring our combined skills to solve design problems for the end user. Our focus is on making the experience for the operator as easy as possible.”

The judges were looking for originality, creativity, technical innovation, craftsmanship, skill and sustainable use of resources. Judges were also looking for how well the design solution met the needs of the end user. At AuCom, usability has become fundamental to the design of soft starters and other products.

For the product category, judges were impressed by the performance of the EMX3 in terms of:

  • Concept design, creativity and innovation
  • Fit for purpose and ergonomics
  • Aesthetic/Appearance and style
  • Technical resolution, sustainability and quality

Director of Design, Craig Tuffnell commented that “This gold reaffirms our own belief in the design of the EMX3 starter. We have received glowing praise from customers, end users and our own team are proud of the product. We are committed to providing our customers with easy-to-use, functional products to serve them well.”
